POSITION FUNCTION

Coordinate and participate in irrigation work at the trades level.

 

KEY DUTIES

  • Design, install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems, including install, test, certify and maintain backflow prevention devices. Troubleshoot problems, schedule irrigation systems and program controllers using current software and devices. Conduct irrigation system inspections and audits, winterize irrigation systems, drinking fountains and park washrooms, and provide technical advice to City staff.
  • Read, plan, and lay out irrigation system for construction.
  • Determine and order materials and equipment as required, complete daily work records and equipment slips.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles, equipment, and tools such as a tractor with related attachments, rototillers, ditch witch, turf equipment, and various hand and power tools.
  • Perform equipment maintenance.
  • Report repairs and damage to equipment to supervisor and mechanic shop, maintain fuel and equipment at various work sites.
  • Provide work instruction to other staff as required; Occasionally respond to enquiries from the public, staff and outside agencies regarding general parks information.
  • Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

  • Work is performed according to seasonal schedule and is reviewed while in progress.
  • Issues such as plan changes are discussed with supervisor.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

  • Lift and use heavy materials and equipment. (often)
  • Dig by hand. (frequent)

  • Normal.

Visual/Auditory Effort:

  • Normal.

Work Environment:

  • Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)
  • Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (continuous)
  • Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to primer and glue. (occasional)
  • Exposure to equipment noise. (occasional)

 

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Organize and prioritize work. 
  • Understand and apply all aspects of irrigation, and cross connection control.
  • Read and interpret irrigation and engineering plans.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Work safely on job sites.
  • Ability to understand and apply plumbing techniques.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  • High School Graduation
  • Completion of 2-year Horticultural Diploma or completion of 4-year BC Trades Qualification in landscape horticulture or an equivalent Diploma or Trades Qualification in a related field. (2 years)
  • Certified Irrigation Technician – Level 1 and 2 (24 hours)
  • Cross Connection Control Certification (40 Hours)
  • Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

Experience:

  • 1 year of related experience at trades level or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
