POSITION FUNCTION
Perform road construction functions related to major and minor road rehabilitations and repairs.
KEY DUTIES
Prepare job site for paving by breaking up damaged edges or failures with jackhammer; padding for excavators, graders and trucks; read and interpret grade sheets and underground plans to locate and mark out underground services as it applies to road rehabilitation and reconstruction; build road crown design; set grades for manhole castings and set manhole castings; reset castings to meet new or proposed road grades by removing existing road surface and adjusting casting; shovel and rake materials such as gravel and concrete to the required grades and depths; operate boning rods and laser level to determine and get grades for road base gravel.
Determine materials and equipment required for road construction; estimate cement required for job, build forms, pour and finish cement for related projects; place drain rock and pipe; select and mix concrete and mortar for footings; set grade and alignment stations to meet existing structures or to follow engineering plans; grade and finish concrete road base to specific grades.
Assist in setting up and taking down of traffic control signage and delineators; perform flagging duties as required.
Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment; operate skid steer loader to load and grade granular materials; operate service truck with crane and attachments; perform snow and ice control functions using a skid steer loader or service truck equipped with sand/salt units and snow plow; operate up to 12 ton roller; operate multiple types of trucks, digging and compacting machines during excavation and road building procedures; install CB’s, connect and repair storm drain laterals; operate digital pipe locator to locate underground services; fill out daily equipment logs and time records.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress.
Problems are referred to supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understand and apply the techniques of road construction and maintenance.
Use hand tools, instruments and operate power equipment.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, utility information sheets and grade sheets.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Work and operate equipment safely.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Current and valid class 5 B.C. Driver’s licence with air brake endorsement
Snow and Ice Removal Certification. (12 hours)
Experience:
2 years of experience in road construction.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
