POSITION FUNCTION

Assist in the construction of forms and placing of concrete for curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

 

KEY DUTIES

Operate various hand and power equipment such as shovels, jackhammers and concrete saws to prepare sites for concrete work such as sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveways; lift and load broken concrete; erect, strip and clean forms; operate vehicle to pick up and deliver construction materials; act as padman to direct the operation of various construction and excavation equipment.

 

Assist in constructing forms to grades and alignments established from grade sheets and control points; assist with setting pins and arms to control the alignment of the curb extruder.

 

Place concrete by shovelling and levelling; assist with first stage jointing and edging; apply various curing compounds; assist in finishing exposed aggregate concrete by brooming and clean-up, and other activities such as pattern stamping, setting castings, electrical boxes, post sleeves, and interlocking pavers.

 

Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress.

Problems are referred to supervisor.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Shovel, rake, load and dig heavy materials (often)

Build forms, place and finish concrete. (often)

Operate jackhammers, cut-off saws, plate tampers and compactors. (occasional)

Mental Effort:

Normal.

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Normal.

Work Environment:

Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)

Exposure to equipment noise. (often)

Work on construction sites. (continuous) 

Work in moving traffic (occasional)

 

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and discuss job related matters.

Operate various power equipment and hand tools.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

Grade 10.

Current and valid class 5 B.C. Driver’s licence.

Experience:

1 year of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
