The City of Victoria is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Assistant to join our Transportation Team. In this dynamic role, you’ll support the planning and operation of the city’s transportation network by collecting and analyzing field data, operating traffic counters, assisting with traffic studies, and supporting active transportation initiatives.
Your work will directly contribute to improving road safety, optimizing traffic flow, and enhancing mobility for all users—whether they walk, cycle, drive, or take transit.
This is a great opportunity for someone with civil engineering coursework and a keen interest in transportation systems. You’ll gain valuable experience in traffic data collection, mapping, and technical investigations, all while working outdoors and engaging with the community.

POSITION FUNCTION
Collect a variety of engineering services data and assist with field surveys.
KEY DUTIES
Participate in the collection of field data for engineering projects; operate various manual and electronic equipment such as survey levels, traffic counters and sewer and drain depth recorders; collect seasonal water samples from various locations for laboratory analysis.
Update computer files and records from source data and prepare statistical reports; assist in the production and updating of related engineering drawings and maps.
Conduct preliminary investigations regarding sewer odours, water leaks, flooding conditions and harbour pollution; conduct transportation counts; respond to general enquiries from the public and staff; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and supplies.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.
Problems are referred to supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Basic level operation of a personal computer.
Read and interpret engineering plans and drawings.
Communicate effectively verbally.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Accredited civil engineering courses. (1 year)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's licence.
Experience:
6 months of related experience.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
