Position Function: Perform duties working in the construction, maintenance and repairs of all aspects of the City of Victoria’s electrical plant and facilities.

 

Principal Duties:

  • Repairs all types of street lighting systems and equipment, both overhead and underground
  • Install, maintain and repair all city-owned electrical equipment such as ornamental street lighting, underground duct and cable structures, inside and outside wiring, transformer stations and outside sub-stations, traffic signals, motors and generators.

 

Other Duties:

  • Operates aerial devises.
  • Responds to emergency call-outs.
  • Respond to enquiries and calls for service from City staff and outside agencies by providing field locate information.
  • Participate in the design, review and estimates of electrical systems as applied to work projects.
  • Compile related work reports, records, and as-built drawings.
  • Consult with and coordinate with other agencies such as BY Hydro, consulting engineers, technicians, inspectors and general public.
  • May be requested to substitute in more senior positions.

Own Car Required: No

 

Normal Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday; 40 hours per week between 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (an 8-hour period within this range).

 

Qualifications Required for this position – Basic Qualifications:

 

Education:      High school graduation

Current and valid Interprovincial Red Seal Trades Qualification as an Electrician (4 years)

                      Current and valid Class 5 B.C Driver’s License

                      Air Brake endorsement preferred

 

Skills:             Organize and prioritize work

Understand and apply the techniques of electrical systems repair and service.

Use hand, power, measuring tools and diagnostic instruments of the trade.

Read and interpret engineering plans and drawings, technical drawings, manuals and related codes.

        Maintain accurate records.

                       Deal effectively with staff, the public and outside agencies.

                        Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

                        Work and operate equipment safely.

                    

Experience:   4 years of related journey level experience

                      or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Independence:         

Work is reviewed through on-site inspections and/or reports to supervisor/assistant supervisor.

Issues involving deviations from trade procedures are referred to supervisor

Expenditures are referred to supervisor/assistant supervisor

 

Essential Qualifications:

                        Lift and carry medium weight equipment.

                        Work in awkward positions bent over or with hands in the air.                    Short periods of intense concentration while diagnosing problems.

Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to asbestos.

        Exposure to dust and fumes.

                       Work in close proximity to moving traffic.

                       Work outside in all weather conditions.

                        Ability to pass respirator fit testing
