POSITION FUNCTION

Operate a crane equipped service truck to transport materials and equipment to job sites and perform road maintenance functions.

 

KEY DUTIES

Operate a crane equipped service truck to pick up and deliver various materials and equipment such as compressors, cold mix asphalt, gravel and concrete; read and understand engineering plans and grade sheets to determine the location of underground services per BC-1 report;  hand locate underground services; load and unload materials by hand or by using a hydraulic telescoping crane , box lift hoist, forklift or front end loader to place or remove steel plates, catch basins, cast iron castings and manhole sections from road excavations; operate various construction equipment such as jack hammers, spray kettle, infrared heater and crack sealing unit; shovel, rake and roll with vibratory roller.

 

Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log, crane log, and time sheet.  Refuel trucks and equipment as required.

 

Respond to requests for materials from various crews and other sections; determine order of delivery; requisition materials and supplies from City stores or outside suppliers; move equipment and materials to new location and clean up job sites; remove and dispose of construction rubble.

 

Conduct road maintenance inspections; repair minor failures such as potholes or advise supervisor of road failures; assist crews with road maintenance tasks such as asphalt raking as required; instruct staff in the crane operation procedures;  post and remove traffic or pedestrian warning signs; perform flagging duties as required; maintain inventory of road signs for section; code material slips and work orders; monitor cold mix asphalt supply and reorder from supplier as required; produce pre-cast concrete barriers by setting up forms and pouring concrete.

 

Place paving tins in all access ports and catch basins prior to road resurfacing and remove upon completion; place or remove steel road plates from road excavations.  Perform snow and ice control functions using a skid steer loader or a service truck equipped with a sand/salt unit, brine unit, and snowplow.

 

Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned and reviewed by supervisor.

Problems such as extent of road repairs, priority of assignments and major expenditures are referred to supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and apply techniques of road construction and pavement maintenance.

Operate a hydraulic crane equipped truck and related equipment.

Use hand tools and power equipment.

Read and understand engineering drawings, utility information sheets and grade sheets.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.

Work and operate equipment safely.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

Grade 12.

Snow and Ice Removal Certification. (12 hours)

Traffic Control Person Certification. (16 hours)

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement (16-20 hours) and overweight trailer endorsement.

Experience:

2 years of experience in road maintenance.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
