Road Maintenance Worker (LTD – Term Unknown)

Engineering & Public Works Department

 

POSITION FUNCTION

Perform various road maintenance functions related to pavement maintenance and restoration.

 

DUTIES

Prepare job sites for paving by breaking up damaged edges or failures with a cutsaw or jackhammer; read site plans and assist excavation equipment operator by hand locating underground services; breakout and repair or replace castings with a jack hammer; shovel and rake materials such as gravel, concrete and asphalt to required grades and depths; operate equipment such as powered tampers or vibratory rollers to compact gravel and finish roll hot asphalt; operate drying equipment such as infrared heaters or hand torches; operate spray kettles and  crack seal unit; operate a crane equipped service truck and Thermolay hot box truck to transport materials, equipment and crew.

 

Assist in setting up and taking down of traffic control signage and delineators; perform flagging duties as required.

 

Perform snow and ice control functions using a skid steer loader or a service truck equipped with a sand/salt unit and snowplow.

 

Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment, by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; report accidents and damage repairs to supervisor and mechanic shop; refuel  trucks and equipment as required; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log and time sheets.

 

Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned and reviewed by supervisor.

Problems are referred to supervisor.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Shovel, rake hot asphalt and jack hammer. (frequent)

Lift and move heavy materials and equipment. (frequent)

Mental Effort:

Normal.

Visual/Auditory Effort:        

Normal.

Work Environment:

Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)

Exposure to dust, vibration and equipment noise. (frequent)

Work on construction sites. (continuous)

Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (frequent)

 

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and apply the techniques of asphalt raking and pavement maintenance.

Use hand tools, instruments and operate power equipment.

Read and interpret engineering drawings, utility information sheets and grade sheets.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Work and operate equipment safely.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

High school graduation.

Snow and Ice Removal Certification. (12 hours)

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

Experience:

2 years of experience in road construction and maintenance.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

 

Work schedule: Monday to Friday, (40 hour work week)

$34.35 per hour, Pay Grade 7
