Engineering and Public Works Department

 

POSITION FUNCTION

Participate in the application, maintenance, and removal of decorative and protective painted and coated finishes.

 

KEY DUTIES

Perform any combination of tasks pertinent to the application, maintenance, and removal of decorative and protective painted and coated finishes on various assets such as seawalls, bridge abutments, hydrants, poles, pump stations, vaults, street furniture, interior and exterior walls, railings, shelters, and monuments; provide instructions and information to other staff and contractors as required.

 

Read and interpret product and safety data sheets; recommend and provide input on product selection and application method; measure areas and calculate required materials; coordinate work activities with sub-contractors and other City departments; perform inspections to diagnose paint and coating failures and required maintenance; place and collect cones and signs in work area; set up traffic control, ventilation, and confined space entry as required; notify agencies, businesses and or residences of pertinent project details; complete a variety of records and reports such as safety and regulatory documentation, timesheets, work orders, maintenance and installation records, and inspection reports; respond to enquiries and complaints from the public as required.

 

Prepare various surfaces such as wood, masonry, drywall, plaster, synthetics, stucco, and metal using methods such as sanding, scrapping, patching, pressure washing, sandblasting and acid etching; apply various materials such as paint, high performance coatings, waterproofing, fireproofing, varnish, shellac, wall coverings and specialty finishes.

 

Operate a vehicle and trailer for transport of equipment and materials; operate various hand tools and power equipment such as airless or pressure-feed spray systems, scaffolds, swing stage and needle gun; operate articulating boom lifts and aerial lift trucks as required; perform routine maintenance and cleaning of paint machines, spray guns and other equipment; load and unload equipment manually or using a forklift.

 

Remove or paint over graffiti from City property.

 

Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor through work order or verbal instruction and reviewed upon completion.

Issues such as work schedule or colour selection are referred to supervisor.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial work platforms. (often)

Work in awkward positions with arms unsupported. (frequent)

Perform repetitious tasks such as brushing, rolling, spraying, and blasting. (often)

Lift and move heavy equipment and materials. (often)

Mental Effort:

Short periods of mental concentration while detail painting. (occasional)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Short periods of visual concentration while detail painting. (occasional)

Work Environment:

Painting Booth (frequent)

Sand Blasting Booth (frequent)

Work from heights. (often)

Work outside in all weather conditions. (frequent)

Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to hazardous materials (continuous)

 

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Organize and prioritize work.

Discuss job related matters.

Read and interpret product and safety data sheets

Understand and apply the methods and principles of painting trade.

Operate and maintain various hand and power tools and painting equipment.

Operate articulating boom lift and aerial lift truck.

Maintain accurate records.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.

Work and operate equipment safely.

Understand and follow all safe work procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

High school graduation.

Current and valid Certificate of Trades Qualification in Painter and Decorator. (3 years)

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

Experience:

1 year of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

 

Work schedule: Monday to Friday, (40 hour work week)

$41.51 per hour, Pay Grade 11
