Milling Machine Operator (Temporary – up to 8 months)  

Engineering & Public Works Department

 

POSITION FUNCTION

Operate an automated milling machine with self-loading conveyor system.

 

KEY DUTIES

Operate a pavement milling machine equipped with a conveyor belt loading system to grind existing asphalt or concrete road surfaces; set and adjust manual and automatic sensors and controls to meet specific grades and depths for road construction, repair and utility cuts; direct dump truck while loading millings; operate a service truck to transport milling machine to and from job sites.  Perform road construction on major capital works projects as outlined in the yearly construction project schedules.  Read and understand Engineering plans, underground utility checks, and BC1’s.

 

Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; perform minor maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating machine and changing cutting teeth; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop.

 

Perform various road construction or maintenance tasks such as sweeping and shovelling asphalt millings, operating jackhammer, power brooms, cracksealer, rollers and compactors, raking asphalt and setting up traffic control cones and barricades; set castings to grade; assist with traffic control as required; operate loader.  Perform snow and ice control functions using a skid steer loader or a service truck equipped with a salt/sand unit and snowplow.

 

Provide information and guidance to staff to ensure safe operation of milling machine.

 

Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned and reviewed while in progress by site supervisor.

Problems such as equipment repairs and safety or procedural issues are referred to supervisor.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Shovel asphalt millings. (often)

Lift and carry heavy objects. (occasional)

Operate jackhammer. (occasional)

Eye, hand, foot coordination while operating multiple controls. (often)

Work in awkward positions while manoeuvring machine close to obstacles. (frequent)

Mental Effort:

Short periods of intense concentration while operating large milling machine close to traffic and other obstacles. (frequent)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Normal.

Work Environment:

Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)

Exposure to dust, jarring and equipment noise. (frequent)

Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (frequent)

 

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and apply the techniques of road construction and pavement maintenance.

Operate an automated milling machine with self-loading conveyor system.

Read and understand engineering grade sheets and utility plans.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Work and operate equipment safely.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

Grade 12.

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence with Restriction 20 endorsement.

Current and valid Traffic Control Person certification. (16 hours)

Current and valid Snow and Ice Control Certification. (12 hours)

Plan Reading. (8 hours)

Experience:

3 years of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

 

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, 40 hour work week

$36.55 per hour, Pay Grade 9
