Street Sweeper Operator (Temporary – up to 6 months)  

Engineering & Public Works Department

 

POSITION FUNCTION

Operate a street sweeper for cleaning streets and lanes.

KEY DUTIES

Operate a street sweeper for cleaning city streets and lanes; make operational adjustments to avoid construction and obstacles; perform minor maintenance such as cleaning and washing inside and outside of hopper box; remove, clean and replace water filters; lubricate all bearings.

 

Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log and time sheet.

 

Operate a street cleaning service truck equipped with hydraulic crane to empty litter receptacles and move equipment; shovel and load debris from street sweepers and job sites.  Respond to unscheduled or emergency calls such as gravel, cement or oil spills on roads and spread various absorbent materials and pick up dead animals on roads, and boulevards.

 

Fill sweeper from fire hydrants, complete form and forward to Waterworks; notify various sections of damage to City property such as pot holes, broken castings and sign or meter posts; maintain a record of all areas swept on a master street map.

 

Perform hand sweeping or power blowing of sidewalks when the sweeper is not available; remove snow and ice accumulations by shovelling or applying chemical ice melter.

 

Perform related duties where qualified.

 

INDEPENDENCE

Work is performed according to a scheduled route or is assigned by supervisor.

Work is reviewed by supervisor.

Problems such as changes to the route or priority of assignments are referred to supervisor.                                                     

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Confined to cab of vehicle. (continuous)

Lift and move heavy equipment and materials. (rare)

Mental Effort:

Long  periods of intense concentration operating sweeper while watching curb and parked vehicles. (frequent)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Normal.

Work Environment:

Driving. (continuous)

Work outside in all weather conditions. (occasional)

Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (continuous)

Exposure to unpleasant odours, dust, ashes, waste products and potentially hazardous materials. (rare)

Exposure to potentially abusive people. (rare)

 

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and discuss job related matters.

Operate a street sweeper.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Work and operate equipment safely.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

Grade 10.

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brakes endorsement

Experience:

1 year of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

 

Work schedule: Various shifts, 40 hour work week

$29.35 per hour, Pay Grade 5
