Accountant – Financial Reporting (Temporary – up to one year)
An exciting opportunity exists for Accountant – Financial Reporting to join our team of dedicated and passionate professionals. We are looking for an enthusiastic and customer service focused individual to become a key member of the Finance Department. We are committed to going above and beyond for our customers and as an Accountant – Financial Reporting, you will play an essential role in making this happen.
Participate in the work of the Accounting Section of the Finance Department.
Perform month-end and year-end procedures including journal entries, reconciliations and adjustments; prepare year-end working papers, schedules, reports and statistics for the financial statements annual report and provincial reporting; prepare reports and spreadsheets for financial analysis as required by Supervisor.
Administer the City’s investment program as defined by the City’s investment policy; ensure sufficient cash flows are available for operational requirements. Develop, implement and maintain internal audit controls for Finance functions including the Purchasing Card Program; perform internal audits for compliance with Finance policies and procedures.
Participate in the City’s asset management strategy by maintaining the capital asset schedules, including the capturing and recording of all capital asset transactions. Generate and provide reports from the capital asset schedules as required for financial reporting and auditing purposes.
Respond to enquiries from staff, department clients and outside agencies; provide advice and guidance relating to accounting and financial policies and procedures; represent the department on corporate financial projects and committees as required; participate in departmental ad-hoc projects.
Participate in the development and implementation of accounting standards, policies, and procedures for all accounting functions; assist in the planning, implementation and improvement of financial systems and processes as required.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and apply accounting principles and standards related to municipal accounting.
Advanced level operation of current City of Victoria financial and spreadsheet programs.
Interpret related policies and regulations.
Provide technical guidance and advice to user departments.
Maintain accurate records.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
Undergraduate degree in business or related field. (4 years)
Professional accounting designation. (2 years)
4 years of related experience in computerized accounting.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting and budgeting techniques.
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week
$43.36 per hour, Pay Grade 16 (2016 rate)
